    not magical, not enough thought
tbc i only made it through the first third of several episodes i tried but right off there were multiple ads before the actual content began. also the tone and structure seems confessional rather than insightful and the rushed conversational pace plus vocal fry wear me out.

    Disappointed
Despite the title, there is no overthinking present. It is, in fact, a standard amount of thinking. Honestly, not particularly insightful either.

    Loving solo Amanda!
Great guests and I love Amanda’s intellect and candor!

    Definitely for me
As an overthinker, I love this. I overthink everything! I really like the experts and I like her research. As an aside, I would love to see an episode on magically overthinking past mistakes. That is something that I struggle with. Even from way back in my 20s (30 years ago). Please please please overthink about having an episode on that! And keep doing what you’re doing. 🩷🩷🩷🩷

    No advice from sociopaths thanks
Couldn’t believe she brought a sociopath on to degrade victims of sociopathy lol Are you serious?? Nah. I’ll pass

    My favorite of 2024
I’m a huge fan of Amanda Montell’s writing, and this podcast feels like everything my brain craves all packaged together in compelling hour-long episodes. Amanda is in top form, leading with vulnerability and self awareness as she interviews her stellar guests. As different as the topics are, I always walk away feeling more informed, equipped, and of course more seen as an anxious/magical overthinker. Thank you, Amanda & team! Love everything about this show and can’t recommend it enough. PS: while it might not be important to everyone, this podcast has the most beautiful music to the point that I try to listen on quality speakers. It’s that satisfying. 😂 Way to go, Casey!

Not as deep as you would expect
Based on the description, I expected far-reaching intellectual musings and cogent meditations about the subjects presented. Not so. It’s rather vapid, superficial and empty of meaning. The host’s constant giggling is also off-putting, as is her obsession with Margaret Atwood
  • PistachioTheCat
    Anxiety for fun
Perfect for people like me who love to deep dive a difficult subject but lack the cognitive focus and time. The topics are super relevant to the now, and it’s helped normalize a lot of my own thought spirals!

    New listener!
Really loving this podcast! Every single episode has opened my eyes more than before and I really appreciate it.

10/10- Wholesome and helps us overthinkers
I learnt about this show via Sounds Like A Cult, and I’m now a big fan! I love the tone, the structure and content. It gives so much peace and solace despite addressing hard topics (Burnout, Death). Perfect podcast for curious chronic anxiety balls🧶, who live by irrational thought spirals🤓

Adult Friendship Episode - Favorite Yet!
I literally can’t stop thinking about this episode and have referenced it in conversation at least 4 times in the past week! It offers such an insightful and helpful framework through which to navigate the difficult nuances of adult friendship with a level of depth and vulnerability to the conversation that I so desperately crave in this scroll-y world of oversimplification. Amanda consistently delivers as a host, always finding a way to beautifully articulate an overwhelm I’ve experienced 100 times but couldn’t find voice for. I especially applaud the way she approached this episode post election. Her authenticity and strength are inspiring and infectious, and while I LOVE Sounds Like A Cult, Magical Overthinkers is raising the bar for cultural commentary in such an incredible way that is quickly becoming my new favorite.

A refreshingly honest, funny, and relatable podcast
Amanda is so easy to listen to: she’s charming, clever, kooky, silly, and straight up REAL. Her honesty and authenticity is so refreshing in this day and age. Who doesn’t want to listen to real people just chatting about real life stuff? Highly recommend!

    Love!
This podcast is a twice monthly grounding

    It’s okay
Much better than the last podcast but god she’s whining about a presidential election like she just got a tuberculosis diagnosis. Pull yourself together, you spoiled brat. Just shut up we’re all upset about it but some of us can’t just run away to Italy. And your guest just now realizing that all elections are influenced by billionaires… come on dude. Wake up.

    I love Amanda Montell!
As someone interested in both linguistic and cultural analysis, I have become a huge fan of Amanda Montell. She is wickedly smart, locates credible sources (like peer-reviewed articles and quality journalism), and engages in nuanced thinking and conversations. She is also funny and the content feels approachable, despite the often dark content. It’s fine to laugh at the absurdity of the world. Honestly, she could start a podcast about pet dander and I would give it a listen because she’d probably make it interesting.
  • YoGiYoGiJY
    So far loving this pod
The Toxins episode- this is my thought spiral always, and I so appreciate this episode!!! Also listened to the Death episode and it was great too!!
  • chelle.cooper227
    Millennial Cringeworthy
I came to the pod through the millennial cringe episode and stayed for the rest. So good! Love the food for thought presented thoughtfully. I used this pod as a conversation starter at least 5 times today! Thanks!

    Science Hero Mother
Amanda, thank you for sharing your science hero mother with us! She’s my new favorite science expert. Great show on overthinking about toxins. (Love your show!) Please tell your mother thank you and wow. She’s awesome!
  • Erin from Duluth
    Toxins episodes
I love this topic, and loved Amanda’s conversation with her mom. Nuanced and funny as always. The opening and closing questions are always fun fodder for thought.
  • Tiffinita
    Amazing
I love this show and realize : I’m a magical over thinker too. It is highly informative, funny, and honestly, helpful. I especially loved the episode on toxins with mom and daughter, who, by the way. ARE THE CUTEST! Thank you and keep overthinking.

    My Sanity Needs This
Keep going Amanda! Our collective sanity needs your vulnerability to put it all in perspective. Sending courage ❤️

    Perfect spiraling but thoughtful conversations!
The conversation I have in my head but want to have in real life with a thoughtful intelligent friend. These are conversations I crave!

    Love everything Amanda Montell
Great voice, great thinker, great subjects, good humor. Love this podcast !
  • Delighted2bHere
    Helpful & Fun!
I really enjoy the lighthearted exploration of topics that feel VERY important to our times. The show dives in when it needs to but also keeps things from ACTUALLY going into a spiral.

    🤗
I’m not an overthinker myself, but I really enjoy the way Amanda presents information, and her voice is pleasant and comforting. I followed this project out of loyalty, but stick around for the unique perspective on so many interesting topics.
  • BrasstracksFanatic
Glad I’m not the only magical overthinker in the room
I found Amanda through her book Cultish which led me to her podcasts, and I am in love! I love how she balances deep levels of research on every topic and silly relatable energy.

    Live your life
So happy to follow Amanda from “Cultish” to “Sounds like a Cult” to “The Magical Age of Overthinking” to “Magical Overthinkers.” I appreciate the mix of fun and silly mixed with thoughtful and kind.
  • Choiserock
    Smart and thoughtful
This podcast is a breath of fresh air. It’s hard to find podcasters who coordinate discussions with experts this well-researched and intelligent. I haven’t found another one like it.
  • Madame Lexy
I love how it pisses off “conservatives”
Great show!! Apparently MAGA is upset cuz calling out the insanity is considered biased.
  • Tgggggggggggggggg_
Please cut down on the ads
Great idea for a show! Some topics are interesting to me and others aren’t, but what brings this from 4 stars to 3 is the sheer quantity of ads that have been shoehorned in! It’s really jarring and annoying that Amanda will be practically mid-sentence and then 2 minutes of ads kick in suddenly that are mixed at a way different volume, often waaaay louder than the show audio. I commute by bike and they always catch me off guard. Please be a little more conscientious about this.
  • Morgs2011
    Hit or miss
Some of these episodes are actually very great and informative. But some of them are on the spectrum of cringe and eye roll worthy.
  • Karissabug
    Took a turn for disappointment
Loved this podcast, naturally, because I’m an over-thinker. The topics have been really fun and relatable. That was until the Election episode. I’m an independent middle of the road voter who happens to be very uninterested in hearing the host and her guests be largely biased against conservatives. Pushing a liberal agenda biiiiig time with this one. *cringe* The bio of this podcast doesn’t say it’s intended audience is liberals (and I didn’t catch that vibe fully before) but please know, it is. Such a disappointment for a podcast that has so much potential to chat about material that brings people together. Inclusiveness only matters sometimes I guess.
  • mowwcat
I am literally in my own way
As an over thinker a lot of these topics are my head and I love listening to similar perspectives & also hearing professionals talk about stuff like narcassism
  • Granbearr
    Amanda please
I love this show but Amanda please go to the dentist.
  • goodpodclub
    it’s ok
A little too rehearsed and self-centered

    Love Amanda Montell's Work
I love Amanda's books and the podcasts she's grown from two of them. Magical Overthinkers is quickly becoming my favorite. The balance between authentic vulnerability, deep thinking and lighthearted silliness eases listeners into deep dives on topics they might not even realize they care about. She always brings on intelligent and interesting guests. I suspect I'm outside the average age-range of most listeners (rainbow socks and roller skates was my go to kindergarten vibe) and I promise I'm not Amanda's aunt or mom leaving a 5 star review. 🙏✨

    Generations episode is magical
I’m a fan of yours/Amanda’s podcast work at Sounds Like A Cult already and was interested to see where she was gonna take this one. As a dead center, card carrying GenXer I got hooked once again after listening to the Millennial Cringe episode. Describing Boomers as “earnest” is so dead on. I have always labeled Boomers as obtuse mansplainers, but calling them earnest instead scratched an itch for me. Broad strokes IMHO; They have no sense of humor or curiosity and think what they say is right. They are earnest! And so annoying! Lol. Anyhoo…great episode. How interesting would it have been to have a snarky and skeptical GenXer in that convo too? Maybe a future episode. GenXers are listening. Thank you Amanda & Co!

    Cool Show
I was reluctant about this podcast. A bit about magical things. However this lady cusses and reminds me of a female Joe Rogan.
  • sunnyjax95
    One of my favorites
Great topics to dive into! Every episode is engaging and scratches an itch in my brain.
  • CathSerbs
    Had Promise
But the host’s inherent bias towards conservatives is repulsive.
  • FJTiffsmom
    Sounds like it has promise
But the host's manner of speaking irritates me. I couldn't bear to hear her say "delulu" one more time without screaming.
  • NomiJane1221
    Don't overthink it
    Five stars.
  • Emily9813
    Fun, useful, thought provoking
This pod hits the sweet spot between cheeky, heartfelt, and analytical—I look forward to it every week!
  • Queerbeerguy
    So captivating!🥳🌟
I absolutely love Amanda Montell’s work and this podcast series feels like a light hearted way to handle the chaos of the world! It helps bring me some more perspective and calm the nerves down. Fascinating podcast series! Constantly overthinking about what the next topic will be and always waiting for that every other Wednesday!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    Obsessed!
Most perfect show to accidentally stumble into! Delightful, funny, educational, entertaining! I laugh thinking…. Could I possibly be over thinker? Is this why I like this? The answer is of course and always was.. DUH! Fun show.
  • tofulish
    Amanda Montell does it again!
I love her books and her Cultish podcast so I was so excited to check out Overthinking! And it’s her signature deep dive journalism combined with her engaging personality and great guests. Such a fun way to overthink!

i’m absolutely *obsessed* with the magical overthinkers podcast. it’s like amanda’s reading my mind and giving it a big, comforting hug. i love listening, learning, and feeling so much less alone in my thought spiraling tendencies. every episode is a little gem that leaves me both enlightened and understood. highly recommend for anyone who thinks *a little too much*—you’ll feel right at home!
  • SquidneyToo
    Love
Digestible but insightful deep dives into relatable topics that simultaneously remind us we’re not alone in our thought spirals while giving the sociological and psychological context necessary to get out of them!! Amanda is SO brilliant and funny and her guests are clearly subject matter experts. Love
