Law and Chaos

Ignorance of the law is no excuse! That’s true for a traffic stop, and it’s true if you want to participate in whatever’s left of American democracy. If the events since the 2016 election taught us anything, it’s that tuning out is not an option. Legal journalists Liz Dye and Andrew Torrez break down the week’s most important courtroom stories, so you can keep on top of this crazy news cycle. Whether it’s Texas giving two middle fingers to the Supreme Court, or Donald Trump in all the courts at once, we’ve got you covered.

    Best Legal commentary around
Great breakdown, clear, accurate on point legal information really necessary for these times. Commentary is also very funny and love the deep dives. Definitely recommend.

    News
News is expensive these days I’m so I listen to as many free podcasts as I can. I put what little money I have towards electing a better Congress right now. I’ve listened to you from the beginning and I’m impressed with the accuracy and especially your choice of focus. Your humor makes my day Liz.

A helpful take on current events
Both Liz and Andrew are knowledgeable and entertaining hosts. Love the deep dives into 13th century Saxony and the fact they are definitely NOT the same age.

    Surprising
Fine Pod. Not normally one to be patient with podcasters. Too many are wannabe comedians, Simpsons’ addicts, Seinfeld Suckups, and/or pitching a lousy screenplay to Meir Kahane’s people. But there are exceptions. This pod is an exception. Hosts explain the law, know the process, understand the players, and refuse to suffer fools, gladly or on Ailes Spews and CNN.

    Listen to Opening Arguments instead
Andrew Torrez is a sex pest.

A legitimate gossip page disguised as law
I am puzzled by the complete white washing of the money giver, I’m fast at sex? Are you pulling a “like a boss” move of pretending you never did that? Hi, “Alex falcone”, Chris Hopper, “Andrew Torres”.

The Law will not save us from the Chaos
I have long enjoyed the knowledge and debate among the hosts (long = Andrew had another podcast that I dropped when he left). My only annoyance had been their lawyerly belief that “the rule of law” was something real. Now, after the election they seem to be less credulous. As Liz said (paraphrasing, maybe adding a bit 😀) the law is simply what 6 partisan hacks on the Supreme Court say it is. Looking forward to their continued analysis and hoping for change in my remaining lifetime!

    The P stands for Predator
P Andrew Torres is a sexual predator. Liz Dye got her job by harassing Torres’ accusers. You should not support these people. They are awful. I don’t want my legal analysis from people who commit and cover-up sex crimes.

    Just listen to it.
Andrew is an utter law nerd; Liz Dye is a law school trained… she lives in the space between Dorothy Parker and Joan Rigers. Both are by pretty normal in the proffession but these guys take it to new heights. If I could only have two podcasts, this one’s a keeper.

    Yesssssss
This is a great podcast for up-to-date political law-talk. I especially love when Liz and Andrew completely disagree with each other and argue it out with level heads; it’s entertaining and informative.

    Love the content
I’m not a lawyer but these two do explain the law in a way that is understandable, even if they talk very fast.

I love this show! Liz and Andrew make my day!

    Great hosts with amazing chemistry!
I enjoyed these two on their previous show and was elated to see them venture out on their own. They make legalese palatable and fun for the layperson.

I've finally found the podcast again.
I was so disappointed when Opening Arguments changed. Happy to find you guys again.

I generally try to get my legal podcasting from people who haven’t shown moral turpitude that should disbar them

    A Real Legal Podcast
If you want a good legal podcast, it needs to be written and hosted by lawyers. This is what this podcast is. Andrew and Liz have great legal analysis, good banter and you won’t miss the show when that other bozo who was kinda funny was on there. He thought he was a lot funnier than he was.

    Like an Infomercial
I was excited for the two hosts, Liz and Andrew, to get back together. But, it’s mostly been a disappointment. If you liked their other show, you will get slight hints of that. There will be some light discussion about law topics in the news, followed by constant advertisements for their other revenue streams. Be prepared to have any interesting or in-depth conversation locked behind a paywall, while you continue to listen to ads. Most content creators either lock portions of their content behind a paywall OR they have an ad-supported version. They have decided to do both, locking the majority of the content behind a paywall while simultaneously forcing you to listen to ads for the cliff notes. I’d be willing to pay for the full episodes if it wasn’t for the fact that then I’d be paying to still hear them mention their Patreon and substack 30 times an episode.

    Best team in legal podcasting!
Smart and funny (to the extent that any of *this* can be fun).

    Sharp wit and incisive analysis
I love Liz Dye. She’s tough, smart and no-nonsense but incredibly funny at the same time. She helps me hear the political news without my anxiety about the future of our nation overwhelming me. AT has always brought out the fun in her, so I am glad to have him back. He is also very informed and incisive. No idea if AT is an a-hole or not. And I get why AG needed to stay clear of his issues regardless of whether his contrition was genuine. It would ruin her brand (btw I love AG too, not criticizing her for that decision- it was the right thing for her). But - even good people mess up, get into highly emotional polarized conflicts, and treat each other badly at times. It’s the severity of the behavior and pattern over time that counts. Sociopaths like Weinstein get no absolution, but maybe AT has earned it? I can’t know what’s in his heart, but if he did not deserve forgiveness my gut feeling is Liz wouldn’t work with him. Thus, I have no reason not to listen to a podcast that brings me great comprehension and comfort in terrifying times.

    A Good Podcast… But…
The difference in audio volume between the podcast and the ads has caused me to have to change the volume multiple times during the newest episode.

    Yes!
SO glad to have Liz and Andrew back!! Everyone makes mistakes and some are well known enough have theirs blown WAY out of proportion. Andrew was dragged through the absolute mud and through that has been contrite and come out the other side. I’m happy for him and happy for me, bc now I can listen to his genius. And good for Liz for teaming up with him in this way. If we were all judged by our worst moments alone… 5 stars again and again. Welcome back, guys!!!

    Creepy
Knowing the history of AT, Liz and AT’s previous law focused podcast, this just feels creepy. Disappointed in Liz.

    Welcome back Andrew!
I don’t know the details of the allegations against Andrew, and maybe he should be in jail. But in the meantime Liz and Andrew are the best combo in the several iterations of L and C / OA.

PSA: new Co-host Andrew Torres is a known sexual harasser
Liz is great and I was super into the rotating guest system early in the show. But after Andrew Torres came in as cohost, I discovered that he left his former law podcast (which I was hadn’t heard of) because of recent sexual harassment and assault allegations against him. During his departure he apparently also created immense legal drama for the whole podcast. The idea that Liz (former host of said show) would reward him for this despicable behavior by giving him a brand new podcast platform (without even mentioning the allegations and problematic behavior of his past) is unconscionable and appalling. I guarantee I am only one of many listeners she has lost with this disgusting decision. I didn’t know this info originally, so I wanted to put it out there so people can make an informed decision to steer clear of this show.

Greatest Duo in Legal Podcasts are back, hooray!!!
Number 1 pick for a podcast that hits the facts hard, makes you laugh, and is so professionally run! Wow, just saw my favorite duo and objectively the smartest, most funny, and well prepared legal podcasters are back online!! I am not joking, I seriously grieved and missed them when their last venue changed hosts. I listen to most of the top legal and political podcasts and this pair is in a class of their own. Why? They combine journalist who has a JD with an experienced attorney with a Harvard Law degree. So they have the credentials, but the magic is they have great chemistry and are equally funny. I am cheering for their next episodes and couldn’t recommend this podcast more.

    Good podcast
Experts and guests do the majority of the talking which is refreshing—-most podcast hosts haven’t mastered this skill

    Look elsewhere
If you would like a legal podcast hosted by people with actual ethics and values there are much better options out there I encourage you to research the subject if you want more information and decide for yourself.

    Awful people
Zero morals. You can easily find better law podcasts
  • BG45
    “Feminist”
Kind of doubting Liz’s feminism since her cohost lost his first legal podcast over being an alleged sex pest & then related legal fallout.

Thanks for bringing Andrew Torres back!
I really missed him! Great addition to the show.

    Great legal lens on politics
Dye’s incisive, insightful commentary, just the right amount of snark, plus erudite and entertaining guests make for a fantastic podcast.

    Liz is the best
I was so sad when Liz left OA (and Thomas took it back; it’s not nearly as good now, all due respect). So I was understandably thrilled to learn that Liz was launching her own podcast. Liz is brilliant, insightful, funny, and relatable. I could listen to her talk law all day.

Liz Dye is intelligent, witty, and hits the mark
I’m thankful Liz Dye is sharing her perspective and humor to serious law topics, immediately relevant. The show format is fresh. There is a balance of Liz Dye’s editorial and guest and subject matter expert’s opinions who bring facts to discuss. Liz Dye is not intimidated to state when she disagrees with a guest and I appreciate this. The critical analysis and rational discussions (with a bit of snarky commentary) are my fav!

    Literally the best
Listening to this show feels like someone took only the good parts of different legal podcasts and put them into one show.

    Liz is a Rochester Favorite
A great law explainer for the lay person. I’ve followed Liz on other podcasts, and can highly recommend this one too.
  • incrediblemulc
    accurate and clear
more of an explainer tone than her writing but still has its little thrills. so far i love it! to those changing the world by undermining liberal pundits: your actions make you right wingers (it’s just a definition thing) which you all of course have every right to be 😁
