Bronze-Age Monsters

31

With the Comics Code loosening in 1971, monsters came roaring back into the pages of our favorite medium. Kids that grew up reading comics were now making them; many of them were members of the counter-culture. Throw in a desire to do something all-new (and some fads like kung-fu) and you have all the makings of a wild decade of comics.Join Jacob Balcom & Matt Howell as they explore some of the craziest comics of the 1970s (and early '80s). Each season focuses on a different character.

Monsters, mirth, madness, mixology, and more
Great show, love the deep dives into often overlooked characters, creators and storylines. Matt and Jacob have a great dynamic and love this stuff while acknowledging how often it’s goofy, clunky and corny - which is a fine line to tread. Would’ve given 666 stars, but this only goes to 5. Stay Bronze! Plus I want some sweet Son of Satan buttons for my jacket.

The Best Horror Comic Podcast of All Time (f’real!)
I look forward to BAM every time they drop an episode. I’ve been traveling with them down the weird and wild vista of Bronze Age Horror comics since I discovered them as the Werewolf By Night podcast. They bring a depth to the breadth of Bronze Age horror comics. I learn something every time and I bet if you give this podcast a try, you’ll get hooked, too.
  • Well, You Know
    Lots of Fun!
I love the variety of the podcast and the way in which the latest season gives attention to so many wonderful characters. A very fun listen and an easy podcast to drop into! If you love 1970s Marvel, or even have a passing interest, give it a try!

    My favorite comics podcast!!
Matt and Jacob, you guys are the best. I first started listening in 2021 when doing random search’s on Apple Podcasts. I knew about Werewolf by Night but never read any of his appearances. I got hooked quickly and love your guys commentary. I’ve loved old universal movies growing up as a kid, in fact the one I saw being 1941s The Wolfman, so having a podcast like this takes me back. I’ve gotten a bit behind and am now getting caught up on your Bronze Age buffet, and I’m enjoying every bit of it! I’m sad to see Brother voodoo go but am liking N’Kantu the living mummy. Nothing beats go old Bronze Age monsters! Thank you both for all you do! So til we meet again neath the full moon furry ones, here’s howlin at yah!!🐺🌕

    Jesus Wept (for more!!)
This podcast has cursed me with a bloodlust for more Bronze Age comic book horror tinged fun, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be sated even after loving this show for 3 seasons. Jacob & Matt do a killer job each week of discussing everything that’s awesome in both the writing and art of Marvel Horror comics from the 1970s. Their enthusiasm for Werewolf by Night, Man-Wolf, Son of Satan and the revolving door of too easily forgotten villains has led me to purchase waaaay more comics than I can read and now my kid has no college fund left! Thanks to these two fellas my wallet has had more blood sucked out of it than any of Count Dracula’s victims :) I like to think I’m the better for it and I cannot recommend this podcast highly enough, the interviews are great and insightful and I always get a belly full of laughs each episode and am yearning for more by the end of each episode. Thanks fellas!!

Werewolves, Satanic Prodigy, and Monsters! Oh My!
This podcast is fantastic! Matt and Jacob really found a great niche here in comics podcasts. First with Werewolf By Night, and now breaking out into other Bronze-age monsters, this podcast if very educational and entertaining. What to listen to a fun podcast? BAM!

    So glad I found this
I’m a huge werewolf fan, I love reading, watching, or even, shall we say, devouring any content about this legendary monster. I’ve known and read this comic since I was in my teens and have always wished for more content regarding Jack Russel. After watching the new Werewolf By Night special from MCU (and loving it) I went on a hunt for more content about this character. I was pleasantly surprised when I found this podcast and thrilled that there were already so many uploaded for me to catch up on. Thank you and I hope to see more about Marvels best lycanthrope!

The Masters and Rulers of Werewolf Comics
Matt & Jacob have crafted one of the best comic pods around. Between Matt’s quick wit & impeccable editing skills and Jacob’s encyclopedic research & class to their lovely banter together, it’s just a perfect show. Stay furry.

Werewolves everywhere have been waiting for a podcast like this.
This show really helped me through the pandemic. As a kid, I was a fan of WWBN’s initial run of Marvel comics. Love the show. Love the hosts. Learned so much and had a lot of fun. If you like monsters and Marvel Horror comics… why aren’t you listening already?

    These guys are great
I just want to say these dudes are wonderful. They can come off sometimes as elitist but I dont really think thats where their heart is at. They are both great personalities, who have vast knowledge, and who delve into the most experimental history of Marvel( that I know of). Even if you dont like the idea of werewolf comics these guys make you want to. Thanks guys keep it up and always look forward to your shows.

    Keeps me laughing
Laughter is something really needed these days. And this podcast delivers. The review one issue each episode of Werewolf by Night. They talk about the creators, artists, etc. I even learn things along the way. But the laughter keeps me coming back. Thank you!!!

When there isn't an episode I'm sad
This podcast has become my "while doing the dishes - and I don't mind doing them because I'm having enjoying myself." entertainment. Another favorite of mine ended, and based on THEIR recommendation I tried this one, and I love it. The two hosts Matt and Jacob have great "radio" voices and relate to the comics they are reading like normal people. They highlight the great, but will callout the bad as well. They give great background on the creators, have great guests, and have a wonderful enthusiasm. The sound quality is perfect - nothings sounds tinny or hard to understand. Kudos to their audio equipment. They do have a left-leaning political stance, but so do I, so no problem there. I am a new supporter on Patreon and haven't even listened to S1 when they actually covered Werewolf by Night. They are covering Man-Wolf, Marvel's #2 lycanthrope this season. Love it. I would love to see them record an episode live at a con. Highly recommended.

    A howling good time!
The guy’s love for werewolf comics has ignited my own fascination with the character of Werewolf by Night and Man-Wolf. Love their viewpoints. Great podcast!

    Werewolves belong in comics!
I love this podcast! Listening to guys that have such an interest in kind of an obscure title is awesome! One of my first comics ever was WBN #33, which was the 2nd appearance of Moon Knight. I always loved that cover! My only thing I would change is the podcast occasionally drips a little into politics. Not a lot, but enough to comment on it and get a feel for their ideology. It dirties the water just a bit.

    A Howling Good Time.
I came to the podcast around the Tomb of Drcaula crossover episode and have loved it ever since. After reading the entire WBN run a few years back, many of the moments were still fresh to me. So with Matt & Jacob adding their perspectives, charm, and jokes, it definitly made this one the most entertaining podcasts I have ever listened to. It's always a plus to hear from people who really enjoy the chracters and stories as much, if not more than yourself. I hope they return some day for some more adventures with the shaggy one. 5/5 Highly recommended!

    Sad to see this go
I was fortunate enough to have started reading through Werwolf by Night’ at nearly the same time this podcast started. Having a guided tour through the issues week after week became something I really looked forward to, particularly during lockdown. This is the only comics related podcast I’ve followed consistently. The two hosts strike a near perfect balance of genuine scholarship and informed critique with nostalgic indulgence and unapologetic delight at the sublime goofiness of the series. I hope they return soon and look forward to seeing what they do next.

    Get into the Shaggy One!
What a great time this podcast is. Do yourself a favor and read alongside these guys, it’s a hoot. The hosts, Jacob and Matt, have a back and forth that is natural , honest and even enlightening. They are knowledgeable in the material and different aspects of it, such as the comic’s various creators and their careers. Each episode the hosts do a deep dive into an issue and break it down panel by panel. They talk about the comic industry, and various aspects of comic book culture. Plus werewolves in various media. If you’ve been a fan of Werewolf by Night or are looking at the book for the first time, this show is for you.

    Thank You!!!!
It’s taken me awhile hahaha to write a review even though I miraculously found you somehow one episode in. I was listening to Quentin Tarantino’s interview on Eli Roth’s History of Horror podcast and he mentioned how Werewolf by Night was one of his favorite and best comics of the 70’s. I had already owned a few copies and decided to reread them. Then I said to myself I wonder if anyone has ever done a podcast about it. Wa la there you guys were. I dig your podcast so much I decided to get buy the complete collections on comiXology and follow along. I am sad it’s coming to an end and I want my werewolf pin I’ve been hearing about for a year hahaha. I love your guys knowledge of all things comics and snarky attitudes. It makes the podcast extremely enjoyable. I wish you guys would do the Tomb of Dracula run after this but I do recall that you guys are not the biggest fans of that title. How about Monster Frankenstein and Living Mummy co-show hahaha. Can’t wait to hear what you guys are doing next I will for sure tune in. One last thing (this is about a weremail you read) I think a one shot or mini series of the Silver Surfer and Billy Jack set in the early 70’s would be awesome hahaha! I think they should actually hire Quentin Tarantino to write considering he’s said he’s big fans of both. Thanks guys this is has been a fun run!!!!

    Wish I’d discovered sooner!
This podcast is epic! I’m a big fan of Werewolf by Night, and wish I’d discovered this podcast sooner! I’ve learned so much in just a few episodes! I can’t wait to finish catching up, and for new releases. The hosts are entertaining to listen to, while providing important facts about the character, the issues, and comic history. I enjoy the format, and appreciate the opinions and knowledge base of the hosts! Keep up the great work my friends!

I’m actually a real werewolf and here’s a list of things you got wrong!
Just kidding! I have the two Essentials of WWBN but only have read the second one. So when I found there was a podcast that went through the entire series I was stoked, howling with excitement. The show is great. I started with the first episode and finally got caught up yesterday. I’m bummed that there’s only ten episodes left. The hosts are wonderful. Funny, knowledgeable, and thankfully around my age so I understand their references. The guests are also fun. I would recommend WWBN to anyone into lesser know Marvel characters, horror comics, or comics in general.

    My New Obsession
I just discovered this podcast last week, and I’m already obsessed reading along at home as they cover these classic comics. Never would I have guessed that such a niche topic could generate so much excellent content.

    Childhood favorite
When I was around 7 or 8 years old... everyone ran to buy Spider-Man! Not me... I ran for werewolf by night... tomb of Dracula etc. As an adult every convention I attend... this is the series I strive to complete. Your podcast is so great... I love pulling out issues as you discuss them. Great job!!!

I can’t stop listening to this!
After way too long I finally started this podcast and now I can’t stop. Matt and Jacob are delightful to listen to, earnest fans who also celebrate the crazy in this series. I feel like I’m taking a college course with their knowledge. Very highly recommended!!

    Great Content
I came for the Brad Michael Elmore episode and stayed because I truly enjoyed the content. The pod is my favorite escape from 2020!

    My favorite hero
I grew up with a super old couple of copies of this comic. Being 21 it was old to me but by far my favorite comic character. Thank you so much for this show.
  • Werewolfdaddy
    Howling Great!!
Beware the moon!!! I grew up stealing my older brothers comics during the day while he was at school, so my first introduction to Jack Russell was WWBN #3 and I’ve been hooked ever since. Such a great nostalgic feeling listening to these guys having a blast talking about these Bronze Age monster classics! Great podcast guys - keep it coming!

Great podcast on a great classic 70's monster comic
I am very pleased to find this excelent podcast on my favorite of Marvel's 70's monster comics (take that Dracula!). This is the comic that brought you first person narration and plenty of fantastic action and horror. Jacob & Matt go through the issues providing interesting and entertaining commentary and I look forward to hearing them review my favorite issues. Not to mention landing an interview with the creators of the newest incarnation of Werewolf by Night. Recommended!

    Surprisingly fun
It’s just two guys talking about one of Marvel’s unique comic book series that has a interesting history. The commentary of the speakers lends a lot of fun insights into the Werewolf by night comic and can contextualize some of the things that the writers(like Gerry Conway)are trying to go for in the 70’s. A really nice podcast that feels like people reviewing comic book creation in the 70’s-80’s through a decent comic series.
  • Vernson
    Werewolf by Night? Alright!!!
As previously noted, those who know . . . know. This is everything you could wish for in an in-depth review of one of Marvel’s best monster titles from the 70’s. Panel by panel discussion that doesn’t feel tedious or tiresome but is enlightening and entertaining.
  • Bradmichaelelmore
    So up my alley.
If you’re here you know why and this doesn’t disappoint.
