Meeting Malkmus - a Pavement podcast

57

Meeting Malkmus - a Pavement Podcast is an obsessive and exhaustive deep-dive into the songs of the seminal '90s indie rock band Pavement. Working in chronological order according to the date of release, your host jD, takes a song-by-song trip through the Stockton, California group's catalog, from their very first track - You're Killing Me - through their five full-length albums and EPs, including 1992 classic "Slanted & Enchanted," their 1994 breakthrough "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" and their 1999 swan song "Terror Twilight." In each episode, jD hyper-focuses on one song, describing its sound, deconstructing its lyrics and detailing its context, including cool stories from the band's heyday. The goal of the show is twofold: Fold #1: To help others fully appreciate the works of the world’s greatest indie rock band, and Fold #2: to someday, perhaps meet the podcast's namesake - Stephen Malkmus.

    Raw and honest
One mans opinion about a band we share a mutual love for. It’s like having a beer with a friend who is open, raw, honest, and oh so opinionated about Pavement. Nothing fancy or exotic here, it’s JD, who seems like a wonderful guy, who has puts his feelings out for all to hear.

Perfect Sound - A hit for Pavement fans
I’ve been a fan of the band since around 1992 when I went to Uni, I have no recollection of how they entered my consciousness, but I do know they’ve never since left. This is the perfect podcast for this band, self-styled under-qualified and uncool, we couldn’t have a better host in jD. A song by song journey with forays into side projects and what’s happening now, it’s a trip down shady lane and a siren to new listeners. So appreciative that someone decided to do this, love listening, both for the songs and to our host’s honest and raw commentary. By letting us know how much this band means to him, he’s helping us reflect on our own enjoyment and passion for the music. Keep up the good work jD, take care.

    Super fun
Gotta love a guy after my own heart who is going above & beyond going through Pavement’s catalog. You might not find anything else like it. Enjoy!

    Linden
A good idea for a podcast but the content is not robust enough to be insightful or revelatory in any way. Heavy doses of generalizations, equal parts obvious and sweeping. The Lions (Linden) episode has the host pondering the origins of the song’s name. It struck me as odd that the host didn’t check to see if there were any towns just outside of Stockton CA named Linden whose high school mascot is the Lions and whose team colors are yellow and blue. This took 10-15 seconds of googling. His theory about the Linden tree being straight like the streets described in the song is unintentionally amusing, for sure.

    Awesomeness
Such a great walk down memory lane. JD does a great job reviewing and exploring entire catalog of the best band of the last ~40 years.

    A Pavement Review
Listening to these podcasts gives off the same feeling or a better feeling than discovering pavement themselves. I had heard of this from my music teacher, who was also who introduced me to Pavement, with a high school cover of Here that we will never forget. And I hope to end my trip in high school with a cover of Gold Soundz that will rattle through the halls until the end of time, or possibly just the end of the halls.

Part of me wishes I could have discovered this podcast three years in so that I could just binge episode after episode. Such a fantastic show. Thank you, JD.

    The Levee Wash
Coolest podcast of the year. Original, engaging, educational, and done by someone who is just as uncool and under qualified as every other Pavement fan. JD is the Shepard, and he know his was down the path leading to Carrot Rope, and perhaps one day, a Malkmus Meeting. Listen to every episode. Join the journey.

    We ‘cast
There is no podcastration fear. In a chair you will be with jD. He’ll ‘cast, he’ll cast, he’ll cast, but no one will ‘cast with us in this zany town. Chim chim chim sing a song of praise for Meeting Malkmus! He’s in the bath. Pick out some early chestnuts from Slay Tracks. Check that Baptiss Blacktick show, man: it’s sooner than you think. You will enjoy yourself; I will enjoy myself; she will enjoy herself; we will enjoy ourselves. Press that arrow and hear him breakdown Angel Carver Blues. jD thinks he won’t be there to meet Malk, cuz he doesn’t have the coolness or the qualifications anymore. Maybe we could ‘cast together?

Feed my thrill. You did what no man had balls to do, and I’d like to say, “thank you!” It’s not perfect, but neither is screaming into a mic or guitar feedback. But it feels good.

    Great Idea, Fun Podcast
I'm really digging this. It's a fantastic idea to go track by track through the catalog of (in my opinion) the best band of all time. JD has a great perspective and does a fantastic job. The episodes feel like nice "bite sized pieces." I definitely recommend it for Pavement fans. If I were a betting man, I think he gets the Meeting Malkmus of it done. I'm rooting for it.

    Lofi intentionally?
Is this podcast recorded to a boombox with a fan blowing directly at the boombox? And why is he speaking in such a labored tone? Are these a nod to the lofi nature of early pavement stuff? Is the slow speaking a nod to the slacker aesthetic of the band? Or is he just bad at recording a podcast and bad at speaking? Or actually on pot to get into the stoner rock mindset? I’ll continue thru to episodes 3 and 4 hoping it gets better.

    Great project!
I am a huge fan, and I appreciate JD’s thoughtful walk through one of my favorite catalogs. Particularly here in the beginning at the early end, it’s cool to hear the stories that go along with the early recordings.

My husband, our 17 year old and I are really enjoying this. We like it enough that we wished it was longer, like 20 minutes or so but we’ll take what we can get. The whole premise is just so cool.

A great idea for a podcast
I've really been enjoying this podcast. Working song by song through the whole Pavement catalog is a great idea, and of course, we have a very very long run ahead of us if he keeps at it. Looking forward to more!
