The Broadswords

261

Rashemen is a land steeped in superstition, ruled by witches and entrenched in snow. Berserkers reign and spirits roam the frozen wastes. Yllairies, Keilah, and Mépris all have their own reasons for journeying north, but they soon find they have something in common—they are pawns in a divine plot. Join the broads as they unravel the mysteries of Rashemen. The Broadswords is a non-binary and women-led actual play D&D podcast.

    Pleasant Surprise
Was referred to this podcast by TAZ (The Adventure Zone). These ladies are a breath of fresh air when it comes to podcasting RPG. Listening to Season 1 now, love the story structure.

Their heads & hearts are no longer here
I started listening to this podcast in its first season. It was love at first listen! The characters are great, the dm has a slightly annoying voice (especially when she gets sing-dingy) but is fair and comes up with good storylines and npc. However, all things change. New episodes have been coming out more and more sporadically, announcements of née episodes are NOT to be trusted. The dm in particular seems to have already moved on in her head and mostly plugs her “next thing.” I’m very sad and disappointed.

    WOW what a podcast
Love these ladies, they tell a great story with a little D&D thrown in. Sorry to say but it shows, especially when they do their character show. They at level 8 in 2 1/2 years or so. but that’s ok it’s still a great show. I’m sorry to hear that y’all are moving out from the Broadswords. I hope that your next endeavors work out well for you all and the best of luck

    Great actual play podcast.
Stay with it till episode 5. It’s completes a great first leg of the adventure and audio quality improves. The great brassiere vs brazier debate pops up in every dnd show and this one doesn’t disappoint. Never Eat Shredded Wheat. Can confirm. This is a delightful show, with an artfully crafted story by the DM and players.

    Love the Broads
I completely enjoy the cast on how they are painting the scenes with words, I truly feel like I am there in the mix of everything. I stumbled upon this podcast from a holiday special that was done with the venture maidens and liked the character that was the cat and started listing to it. Keep up the good work!!!

    Amazing story and Roleplay
Awesome and vivid world, great PCs who are played by an amazing cast of people, very well placed and used combat, what is not to like about this podcast. I have been listening for about 2 weeks now and I am about to finish season 2, can’t stop listening. The journey this crew and their special guests take you on a emotional roller coaster worth every up and down, and on top of that they keep it totally family friendly. Please keep up the amazing work you are all awesome.

    Fabulous
I began listening to DnD actual play podcasts at work last year, I binged through The Adventure Zone and Dungeons and Daddies and needed more. When I found the broads I was thrilled. Amazing storytelling, hilarious improve, fleshed out and ever evolving characters, inclusive and queer friendly, passionate players and a marvelous DM, it has everything I could have wanted. The first few episodes have meh audio but it is definitely worth it to push past that. I look forward to binging this series for a long while to come. Thank you all for making this :) (And lastly, I literally cried with joy when a group of gender nonconforming/ non-binary magic users were introduced- representation matters 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️)

    Amazing!!
I’m in love with this podcast. The Broads pull you in with there humorous talent for story telling. It’s also a great way to get a peak into the world of DND. I’m real excited to play myself one day now. I also love that it is such an open and inviting place for queer people. Broads you are all amazing and help brighten up the dull days of the current world. So excited to listen more and getting to the bottom of the secrets the rashmen hold.

    Inspo AF!
(Man, apple podcasts is NOT where I listen, but the only place I could figure out how to leave a review!!) The Broads Victoria are inspirational. I laugh, I cry, I cheer, I bite my nails - they have made a world and characters and encounters where you care deeply about what happens. Plus, watching the growth of understanding non-binary folx and how to talk about pronouns as the podcast has become more and more inclusive has been heartening for my little NB heart. I’ve recently started DM-ing my first campaign, and listening to Victoria running encounters and NPC’s (and the complete acceptance that accents are hard and change and sometimes don’t work and that’s okay!!) has given me such a good understanding of how to do it all, and a belief in myself that I can do it. I just finished season two last night. I’ve been nervous about hitting this point of the beginning of the pandemic, because of the way some podcasts have handled it. I think you've been handling it well, balancing reminding all of us on being safe, while also giving us the escapism we all need (11 months in, living in the world’s current hotspot, it’s scary out here). Thank you.

Fantastic Company for a Night Shift
Boy the Spotify recommends got this one right! I work night shift and have been drowning out the piped in music with actual play podcasts. The Broads have been great company as I binged through all the seasons over the course of a week or so. They have a great balance of serious story beats, humor, and ridiculous party shenanigans. The backing music and various foley sounds add a wonderful touch for immersion. I love the commitment to inclusivity both from the cast and the decision to move away from DnD once they wrap the current season. The Cypher System is a fun one so good times now and more ahead! Dive on in!

    Love this gameplay!
Love these ladies and their collaborative and imaginative gameplay. Funny, transportive, and engaging, The Broadswords is one of my favorite podcasts! (Victoria, you’re the best!)

I started listening in 2019, and...
The Beoadswords are down right outstanding! It brings so much joy to my heart! Victoria is a masterful storyteller; Bianca’s Mèpris makes me melt in her in her total innocence; Tracy’s Keilah is always good for a laugh and some witty repartee, and Kristen’s Yllairies absolutely delights with her dry humor. I’m so excited for season three and am looking forward to learning exactly the title of episode one: “Now What?”

    Broadswords are amazing story tellers
I discovered the broadswords about two weeks ago and now I’m fully caught up and sad about it. The DM is an incredible story teller and when PCs are amazing characters and really help the story come to life. I’ve tried to find another podcast to fill the void between episodes and I can’t seem to find any that compare. They have the perfect blend of seriousness and humor while other real play podcasts are just constant jokes and laughing with is too distracting from the story. Broadswords however are perfect.

The friends you wish you had 💙
The Broadswords as a whole are phenomenal. I have never done much fantasy tabletop gaming (didn’t have the right crew growing up) and this was the podcast I found to start exploring and enjoying DnD - BEST choice of the summer! Every aspect of the show is perfect. The Broads as a whole you can tell are amazing people. The storytelling is immersive by Victoria and you literally never know what decision the Broads are going to make in response! As the title says, these 4 incredible humans make you feel a part of the adventure and like you’re hanging out with the friends you wish you had. Side note - totally worth the patronage on pattern for additional content!!

    SO GOOOD!!!!
Th Broads are so goood. They have an engaging world, interesting characters, and so much intrigue. They have helped get me into d&d and I their podcast is my favorite I’ve ever listened to.

    One of the best
I’ve been a huge fan of actual play podcasts for quite some time, but have never listened to one like this. I listen to most of the episodes in a few days I just could not stop! They do an amazing job of mixing both dnd and improve storytelling.

    A Whole New World
I entered the world of D&D through a podcast called Queens of Adventure, a cast of Drag Performers doing actual play. I fell in love with it so I followed the first suggested podcast from ITunes and it was The Broadswords! I am so happy to have discovered y’all. I’ve been power listening on my commute for two weeks. I am only on S2e16 but have committed myself to more! I love the in depth world you create Victoria, and love how the whole group works together to create amazing adventures with plenty of comedy and just the right amount of seriousness. Hopefully you’ve stayed above the knitting podcasts! Keep up the awesome adventures! I’m loving it!

Good group, good story, good stuff
I've spent the last couple weeks working my way through this show and caught up right in time for the launch of its new third season. My favorite part of this podcast is Victoria's style as a GM; she's great at riffing off what the players do to improvise the story, and has done a masterful job so far incorporating the PCs' backstories into the narrative. As a mostly career GM myself, I know how difficult of a balancing act this can be, so I award her a gold star for this one. Like any new project, this show starts a little rough around the edges, but it's worth sticking with it to watch the characters grow and develop as they navigate being abruptly dragged into something much larger than themselves. Give it a listen.

Came for the representation, stayed for the story
Being a non-binary person myself when I heard there was an all woman and non-binary cast dnd podcast I JUMPED!! Despite the rough sound in the first few episodes I immediately fell in love with the broads. That love has only grown more and more listening to them grow throughout the show. Victoria is an amazing dm who creates this enticing story filled with mystery, adventure, and lots of shenanigans. The editing and sound effects/background music really draw you into the world. Tracy, Kristin, and Bee are so much fun to listen to! They’ve created characters that are easy to connect with. I’ve loved the guests that have been brought on and the bloopers at the end of the episodes are one of my favorite things. I’ve finished the full show in just a week and I’m seriously excited to hear what they have planned for season 3. Love you Broads!
  • EllayB
    Polished, Inclusive, and Clever
The Broadswords is a show that leads by example. It has excellent production, elegant game running and world building by Victoria the DM, and Bianca, Tracy, and Kristin glow as players. All four create an immersive experience and a compelling story with wit, humor and emotional depth. Those factors are vital, but they elevate the art by showing loving support for underrepresented groups within the show’s guest list, regular casting, and in the world they’ve built. My only wish is to someday be introduced to a new powerful character with disabilities. I love my actual play DnD podcasts, and often find myself doing searches once my binge addiction catches up with whatever I can find. 2500 + hours of listening has honed my standards to a towering pointy fence, upon which many abandoned listens have been left to rot. The Broadswords sailed right over it, earning a spot on my top 5. (I binged the entire episode list in 6 days.) I don’t know why the show never pinged my radar before last week, but I’m so glad I finally found it!

    Everything You Need
I love the characters, I love the world building, and I love the players’ chemistry! Isn’t that everything you need for a killer d&d show? This is an EXCELLENT podcast and I really recommend it to anyone looking for fresh voices and a fresh perspective!
  • shaktinah
My favorite RPG podcast (& I’ve sampled A LOT)
Love the rich story-telling and immersive sound effects. Love the strong characters and their foibles, which make them oh so relatable. Love the chemistry between everyone. All together it makes for spell-binding entertainment.

    Beware Bodice Booby Traps!
Been binging the broadsword babes. Waiting for the right moment to leave a review. Found it in season two, episode 23, the one where the babes prove there’s a 13-year-old boy inside each of them — as they go looking for a booby trap in a bodice. And realize a bodice is, well, it is a sort of a booby trap! This show is superb!! 😂

    New listener
I was looking for a new DND podcast to keep my attention off the quarantine. I recommend this one highly. The ladies really know how to tell a story in their play. I have never had the pleasure of playing DND but I still really enjoy that the rules and play are easy to follow. Fun for all ages. I have only been able to find the second season. I would love to hear the first sometime though. Still I love the Broads and can’t wait to hear their next episode

    Awesome podcast!!
This is such a fun show. The total inclusiveness, the relaxed way the players all interact with each other, and the engaging story are amazing. It’s fun to listen as the show evolves. I’m sure I’m only one of a whole lot of people who came here because of Travis; but this became one of my subscribed podcasts because these four are excellent storytellers.

    This podcast is a delight!
I started listening to The Broadswords as a new D&D player to help me get a sense of ways to play and got totally swept up in the gameplay! I love the creative, character-focused, enticingly mysterious storytelling. And as our campaign is all trans and non-binary folks new to the game, I’ve loved being able to recommend a podcast that feels so inclusive, thoughtful, and representative. Y’all are awesome!
  • DarkCrystal34
    Totally unique and creative actual-play!
I listen to a lot of actual-plays, and this is by far one of the most unique and creative takes in a high fantasy setting I've heard. Victoria, the absolutely FANTASTIC GM and creator, introduces an air of mystical, dream-like, witches, and magical realism into this medieval setting. It has a huge focus on roleplay, character exploration, and immersing we the listeners into an incredibly well thought out world, that has a fascinating mix of faerie tale, prophecy and magic to go with the pragmatic hard reality of fantasy. Keep up the great work, I'm hooked!

    Blissfully Bingeing the Broads
I started listening to this podcast by recommendation of Travis McElroy, and, coming from someone who mainly listens to comedy podcasts, I was pleasantly but how quickly I became invested in the story and the characters. I’ve recently become interested in D&D in the past few years, but I mostly just listen to podcasts. So far this podcast is unique from all the others I’ve heard. It’s wholesome, creative, and very interesting. Victoria has done an amazing job at creating a mysterious and enticing world that combines fantasy and mystery with the help of her players and guest players. As the characters and world develop and the drama unfolds it’s hard to stop listening. I’m all caught up now and I’m excited to see where the rest of the story takes us. Keep it up! I love y’all!

    👍🏼🔥
Great podcast! In a matter of several weeks I listened to everything from the beginning! I was instantly hooked. Wonderful story telling that keeps me coming back for more. Can’t wait to hear where the broads go next

    Good clean fun
I’m a total fan of the broads! I just found this live play podcast to supplement my total nerd addiction and now I’m binging the show. I love the D20 Dames, Dungeons and Dads, bombarded, TAZ, and I’m a total critical role fan, but I think the Broadswords are every bit as good, and a podcast I can share with my kiddos without worrying about too many F-bombs. If you’re looking for a live play podcast you can share with all ages, try this one!
  • NewsMacTech
    Fun, dramatic role play
I finally found the live play podcast I’ve been looking for! After sampling through a bunch of live play shows I’ve come to the realization that I have a low tolerance for too much out-of-character goofing around (understanding that ‘too much’ is totally subjective). This show hits the perfect balance for me! The story is engaging, the characters rich, the role playing fun (and over the top in all the right places). Only a few episodes in, but it’s a blast!

    Oozing with female empowerment!
I LOVE this podcast. From the very first episode I was on board, instantly drawn in by the mysterious, spooky tone Victoria sets, and the distinct characters created by Kristin, Tracey, Biana. Once you've listened to a few episodes the Broads start to feel like your best friends and you might just find yourself wanting to draw a relaxing bath while you binge listen to season one. What especially love is the overal feminie energy that drives this fantastical world--witches, banshees, queens of old, plus the Broads themselves. As someone who hasn't been playing D&D very long, but who is a passionate promoter of empowering female voices, this show feeds me soul in a way I didn't realize D&D could. I'm just starting season two and I can't wait to keep listening! Thank you ladies!
  • DarthDylan06
    Binge-worthy
I binged this at work over about a week and now I’m NOT happy that I don’t have more to listen to. Fun, engaging story that is worth the wait despite my lack of patience. Love the diversity and willingness to own up to a slip-up or two when it comes to pronouns or the like, and how they normalize setting healthy boundaries. Definitely giving The Adventure Zone a run for its money as my fav podcast.

    Ermagerg!
I don’t know where to begin, but I’ve spent the past two months binge listening to y’all and I love this podcast so much! The first few episodes are a little rocky with audio quality but the world building done by the Victoria (the dm), and the players (Bianca, Kristen, and Tracy) is fantastic and has sucked me into the world. I enjoy that y’all are an all female D&D table as I do feel it brings a bit more inclusiveness into the D&D world. I can’t wait for the next episode!
  • montsole
I can’t believe how fast I binged this
Love the story and characters. Really pleasant to listen to throughout the day.
  • SSSnap_
    Love it!!
I heard about this podcast from my friend Travis, and I’m SO happy I gave it a try! This perfectly filled in the hole in my heart that needed a fun yet meaningful, friendly, and socially conscious DnD game. I’m sad that I’m quickly catching up on the backlog because soon I’ll have to WAIT for new episodes?? Do not understand. Despite my impatience, I cannot wait to see what the Broads will do next. 🤗 Also the theme song slaps, and I’m glad it plays twice an episode so I can jam out twice as much.
  • gabymonsterr
Amazing storytelling with an inclusive cast
In the four campaigns I’ve been a part of, I’ve only once had the pleasure to play with other women. With that in mind, this podcast is giving me LIFE. I binged through the first season in a couple weeks, and season 2 is even better so far. In session 0 they covered topics they want to avoid (thank you!), and the production quality seems to have leveled up! Victoria clearly puts a lot of work into editing these episodes and it shows!
  • joushuu
    Fun times with fun people
The only bad thing about this podcast has nothing to do with this podcast. I'm devestated about the lost of the hard drive, but I love the broads too much to be kept down. This is a fun story to keep listening to and I look forward to each episode.

    Fantastic
I found this podcast a week ago and have been binge listening ever since . The dm is knowledgeable and has really created a fantastic story. This podcast has inspired me to play dnd with my daughters so they can have as much fun as all of you are having

    Haven’t I done this before?
While I may sometimes feel I would have made different decisions if I were playing in the campaign this is a fantastic story. The commitment and camaraderie from Victoria and the Broads is inspirational to say the least. Brilliant world building along with well played and consistent character play make this a real gem.

    Killin it y’all!
The Broadswords is a fantastic show that is just getting better all the time. There is so much tasty witch-ness happening in the world and the whole crew is just absolutely delightful. It is a must listen!

    World-building is A+
I can’t even begin to describe how amazing the world building is in this podcast. The immersive nature of this world is both whimsical and nostalgic. I really appreciate the inclusive nature of this podcast and how Victoria creates situations which parallel the ones we face in modern society. It’s extremely enjoyable, and I’m so happy to have such a large backlog to binge!

    Get Hooked
Of all of the RPG real-play podcasts and videos out there, this is a real stand out. The GM and players are all very good storytellers and have collectively created a rich, fun, immersive world. I never really thought a podcast could capture the magic of playing with my own group, but man does this come close.

    A true epic
This podcast is like watching an epic TV series. The foley, soundtrack, and storytelling details are unequivicable in the genre. It is creative, inclusive, and entertaining. I highly recommend--it is instantly engaging, and only gets better. Well done, Broads!
