Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! Greek & Roman Mythology Retold

4,388
Arts #26

The most entertaining and enraging stories from mythology told casually, contemporarily, and (let's be honest) sarcastically. Greek and Roman gods did some pretty weird (and awful) things. Gods, goddesses, heroes, monsters, and everything in between. Regular episodes every Tuesday, conversations with authors and scholars or readings of ancient epics every Friday.

    Such fantastical stories, so fun
This is a really fun podcast about Greek mythology (not put forward as fact) telling it plainly (with her understandable condemnation of the treatment of women), peppered with colorful language when she sees fit.

    Love Greek mythology
I am happy I finally found a podcast that talks about everything Greek mythology my favorites is Artemis and medusa

1 million episodes would not be enough
I’ve been listening to this podcast for a few months starting with episode 1 after hearing all the crossovers with Ancient History Fangirl, and I am soooo grateful for their connection that introduced me to Myths, Baby! Granted I still have 473 episodes to listen before I am up to date, but I am absolutely in love with this podcast! Super interesting AND entertaining and the feminism (and of course all other pushes for equality on every level) really is comforting to hear with everything going on in the world. I have become so obsessed I have ordered Liv’s books and once I’m caught up will likely join the Patreon. Highly recommend 10/10.

Ancient stories with a radical leftist take
There is almost an insignificant radical right compared to the radical leftists that has taken over our country, with trans insanity, and DEI . This would be a good podcast except for the leftism. You’ve been warned.

    Entertaining & Educational
I found this podcast years ago, and had only listened to the first few episodes and liked it but didn’t really continue. Then, a few months ago needed something new to listen to at work, remembered this from so long ago, and now after only a couple few months am pretty much all caught up. It makes my otherwise incredibly boring day pass with excitement and intrigue, I especially enjoyed the little series on Sparta. Appreciate what you do ❤️

    Informative, but…
… the host seems to be carrying a lot of baggage. I was in a research mode, and found myself in a situation where I was moving a lot and couldn’t stop to read. So I looked up podcast episodes dealing with Zagreus. I found the information amazing, but the host is very hung up on modernist views and terminology like “the patriarchy.” It made her hard to listen to when I just wanted to hear the stories. Sure, call out Zeus for being a rapist! I was onboard for that blunt view, but your political take is eyeroll inducing. While I am curious as to her take on Minerva punishing Medusa for having been raped, I don’t think I can sit through another episode of her haughty whining. Tales of the Night Sky is a much better, more balanced show. She’s not afraid to say that many of the gods are jerks, but doesn’t feel the to blame anyone but the individuals.

Very entertaining and fun to listen to
I’ve been trying to get back into myths for a while now and started looking for podcasts. I found this by Chance and decided to listen because the name caught my attention. As I’ve been going through the episodes, I’ve noticed that I will listen to 5-6 at a time and not even realize it. Liv is very great with her story telling and hilarious, making it very easy to listen to. I’m working my way through old episodes to get caught up and it just keeps getting better. Definitely recommend giving it a listen.

    Amazing Podcast!
This podcast is amazing! It’s like Greeking Out (kids podcast about Greek + other mythology) meets Queens Podcast. Liv’s commentary truly makes this podcast special. I can’t wait to get caught up ❤️❤️❤️

    Caught up
All caught up love the podcast and to hear history from a female point of view. From a non doushbag cis male. One comment never ever apologizes for being weird.
  • dina123!
    Medusa
The pastoralist/patriarchy usurped images of female power (ice age depictions of female fecundity including hybrid human and animals ) to fit with their new fighter and killer realities thus creating monsters from female power symbols to female monsters like Medusa . By late Neolithic women no longer roamed to gather and hunt but were sequestered by these pastoralist patriarchs to provide ready targets for sexual violence and their males’ offspring .

    Love it!
Liv is an amazing storyteller and uncovers myths that I had forgotten. The lens that she tells these myths through is new and modern, which I appreciate. And it’s funny… like really funny. Truly a joy to listen to, and I wish I had all the time to listen to her podcast. Luckily, it’s been very useful when I’m teaching Greek myths to my high school students. Keep doing what you’re doing Liv! And down with the patriarchy!

    Truth To Power
Love this Podcast. And at the end, I agree, cause if that would have happen to any of my sister, aunts, mom or any of my female family members, you best know it, and I’m always giving the Female the benefit of doubt that she was, because, it will all of it will always come out in the rinse cycle. We shouldn’t think she’s not being honest about it, that’s what an investigation is for. Now, please don’t think I’m not unaware that lie’s can be told as well as we are always hearing how 10, 30, 50 years a innocent person was convicted of a crime they did not commit. However, this should be checked out, and it can be investigated without arresting anyone before the facts are pulled to the forefront. as you said, Women have been a class of people that were second and third no rights they were considered property, just like doing slavery when people from the African continent were forcibly taken and brought across the world to be treated like property both were wrong. It was wrong then, as it’s wrong Today in 2024

The perfect amount of appreciation for the stories and rage against the patriarchy. 😊

Wanted to love but just wasn’t for me.
Got to episode three and really really wanted to love it because I really enjoy Greek mythology and find the stories and myths so fascinating. However, the podcast was just too much about blaming the patriarchy and how everything is about men failing the world in every choice they make. I know humanity has its flaws, I see it every day. I listen to podcast because I love how they can take me out of my own world and headspace and take me on an adventure. I don’t need another person complaining in my ear and pushing their viewpoints in the name of ‘reviewing mythology’. History is full of amazing civilizations and their beliefs and I would have rather learned about that instead of the mistakes of my current society.

    Let’s talk about myths
Wish this podcast was around when I was in school. It would’ve made learning about Greek mythology and Greek literature so much better. You don’t have to be intimidated to listen to this podcast. The podcast host breaks down each reading beautifully the guest speaker she has on are absolutely amazing. There’s a top of their fields and have a great perspective on Greek literature. She also likes to shed a light on some of the less popular Greek tragedies, and Works that I would not have been exposed to any other way. The only dangerous part of this podcast is after listening for a couple episodes you’re going to want to take that trip to Greece and see all the ruins and the places.Absolutely amazing please keep up all your hard work!!

I’ve been trying to listen to all the past episodes, and I have to say, they are ADDICTIVE! Def worth listening, especially if you are trying to learn more about Greek myths like I was! ❤️

    Please fix your volume
I LOVE this podcast. The host, guest, stories, they’re great. It’s hard to listen to because the host’s mic is so quiet. Like, I have to turn on my volume up to max just to hear her and then when I get to a commercial I turn partially deaf. The sound is very unbalanced and it makes it hard to listen to, especially as someone who is hard of hearing.

    my favorite mythology podcast!
i’ve been listening for about a year now and i have to say this is definitely my favorite way to listen about greek myths! i admit some of the earlier episodes were a bit slow but it’s the first episodes so i feel like that’s to be expected starting off, but it’s 100% worth sticking with. episodes only get better over time and she explains the stories in a way you can easily follow. plus i love how she ties in current issues to myths and uses her platform to try and do good despite everyone who’d rather ignore issues instead of talking about them, it’s refreshing to have someone who speaks her mind can’t wait for the next episode!❤️

I did not really like it it was… something I only got to the third episode before I just.. quit

    Best ever
I started from the very beginning about a year ago and haven’t stopped listening since! Liv is amazing and inspired part of an Italy trip I took last year. Her retellings and highlighting of silenced voices across myths is magical. I love this podcast!!

    Genuinely love this 🔥
I was looking around for Greek mythology podcasts because I wanted to learn more and you provided the best one, she says everything I think and as a fellow nerd it’s just so fun te hear someone else talking about it with my same mind so that later I can yap about it to my friends. Luv it sm <3 I also love the way Liv points out clear misogyny and wrong things in the funniest ways it’s such a joy to feel board In the day and realising I can always put your voice in my headphones. I’ve been listening from all the way down and I think it’s good. Absolutely love you girl and keep up the amazing work <3 :))

    My Absolute Favorite
I’ve been listening since early 2019 and look forward to new episodes every week. Hearing Liv’s progress and confidence grow along with her ability to research has been amazing. This podcast kept me going through hours of school projects and especially through the covid years. If you’re basing your opinion off of older episodes, PLEASE listen to some of the newer ones first. A lot has changed including the information available and opinions on certain topics. From Liv’s ability to present a lot of information in a condensed and entertaining way to talking to scholars in a way that makes it easy for a non scholar to understand, the podcast is truly a show easy to love.
  • BCMythlover
An amazing well researched thoughtfully presentation of the ancient world!!
This podcast is such a joy to listen to, hearing Liv break down masogyny in ancient Greece and present the myths and stories in a way I haven't heard them before is always the highlight of my day! This podcast is so well-researched and interesting it never leaves me disappointed! I found this podcast when I wanted more info outside of my ancient history class and I haven't stopped listening since! 4 years in and I finally got around to writing a review, thank you so much Liv for the joy your storytelling brings!!

Absolutely fantastic in every delightful way
I started listening to this podcast last October and immediately fell in love with its I was waiting to leave a review until I got caught up, now I am. Liv Albert gives a breakdown of the Myths of Ancient Greece from a fresh feminist perspective, and it’s wonderful from front to back. If you’re new to the show I highly recommend starting from the beginning as every second is pure awesomeness. If you are a fragile man baby who takes it personally when someone condemns rape, perhaps it’s for the best if you skip this show, or listen to it, it’s probably a net benefit if all the incel heads explode. Just a few notes, before you write a criticism of her quoting Harry Potter check the date the episode was released. I am trans and even I have posts from 2018 praising “she who must not be named”, we were all blindsided by her evil bigotry, well unless you are Asian or Jewish, and I am ashamed to have not noticed the racist dog whistles that gave us all a clue as to the monster behind the books until she came directly for my demographic. Also if you’re a Hellenic Pagan, she is allowed to criticize the Gods, it’s that freedom to question and scrutinize that separates us from the absolute tyranny imposed by certain monotheistic religions. I myself am a Hellenic Pagan and I agree wholeheartedly with her take on Zeus and Poseidon, but to point out that the stories about them are objectively bad and people have a right to discuss that into a microphone. Yes many Pagans edit the stories in their minds to make their Gods seem less imperfect, even I do that, but remember that Gods are not perfect, and that our need to learn and grow as people is a reflection of theirs. Also, Liv, when I was listening to your backlog I was eagerly looking forward to your mid 2021 episodes because I knew you would do a whole 180 from quoting that disgraced book and you did not disappoint. Thank you for being an ally, and I wish there was more queer content for you to cover, but alas until there is a massive find of long forgotten myths we’ll have to make due. I would not be surprised to learn that a lot of queer relating stories, especially positive ones, suffered the same oppressive destruction that Sappho’s writings did because of Christian misogyny. Tangents aside it’s an amazing podcast that got me hooked within 5 minutes and you should listen to it.

Too Many Ads for a Show
The content is interesting, but WAY too many ads every couple of minutes x makes it off putting to listen too…

    How to Lose a Listener…
Came to hear about mythology, but instead got ramblings of an unstable sounding person’s perspective of current North American societal issues. I felt compassion for their current hardships at first, but slowly got annoyed when they kept on and on about U.S. hot topics when I just was interested in hearing about ancient mythology. If I wanted to hear about controversial issues, I would not have decided to listen to a podcast on mythology. Hope things get better for you.
  • darth_tater_tot
    Couldn’t get past the errors
I made it to episode 5 before I turned it off and decided to stop. In the first episode she states that Atlas hold up the earth, which is not the case. It’s the sky. But I gave it a pass because mythology is complicated and there are a thousand different versions of the tales (though I don’t think Atlas holds up the earth in any of them). But in the 5th episode she states that 1. The Greeks founded Knossos and the palace complex. They did not, that was the Minoans. The Minoans were not Greek, they did not speak a form of Greek, and predated the arrival of the Mycenaean Greeks. 2. One guy discovered Troy, and another guy discovered Mycenae. They were the same guy, Heinrich Schliemann. Something easily searchable. After that I couldn’t anymore.

    I hear you!
The greatest and most real series of Greek myth and drama discussion and story telling. Liv is wonderful, intellectually adroit and blazingly original! Do yourself a favor and listen, you will not regret it. Thank you Liv, for all that you do, feel, and speak. Solidarity!

    Unfortunate rabbit trails
Had promise but spends too much time on politics and personal views that I can’t stick around for the myths. Her potty mouth also detracts from her credibility. Too many F-bombs for me.

    Best Mythology Podcast!!!
I love this podcast SO much!! Well-researched and hilarious, Liv is an engaging storyteller who doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the brutality and general horror of women’s lives in the ancient and mythological worlds, while at the same time making her love of the classics very clear. That’s right folks, two things can be true at the same time. She draws astute parallels to modern life and somehow manages to keep it all incredibly funny. Liv is doing her part to dismantle the cis-hetero patriarchy through story telling, she’s a queen, and you should listen to this podcast

    I love this $#!T
I'm so glad you found a use for all of your studies in continuing the oral traditions of story telling. Keep up the good work.

Wish I found this pod sooner!
I’ve loved Greek mythology since childhood and I am thrilled to have found this podcast. Liv’s passion for it makes every episode so enjoyable to listen to, and I love her interpretations and musings on the gender politics of the time. Keep doing what you’re doing, girl!

    Coincidence? I think not!
I recently saw an ad for this podcast in another one I subscribe to. I listened to the first episode and was hooked. I also recommended it to my daughter, and here’s where the coincidence comes in. My daughter’s name is Liv, and she’s a first year student at a liberal arts college, and recently declared a double major in Creative Writing and Classics. She’s passionate about Greek mythology, and has been elected as the co-counsel for the Collegia (classics club) on campus for the next academic year. I love listening to her talk, knowledgeably, about Greek and, occasionally, Roman myths. And, I’m enjoying Liv Albert’s podcast, too. As far as the insertion of “bad leftist” comments, well, that commenter forgot to say, “In my opinion…” If you didn’t get Liv’s views on mythology and feminism from the first episode, you need to pull your head out. And, while I’m sure Liv appreciates having as many listeners as possible, there are more podcasts with “bad right-wing” opinions, IMO, than you can shake a stick at. Why don’t you go into that echo chamber so you don’t get your snowflake feelings hurt. Sorry, Liv. I had to go there.

i’m obsessed with greek mythology and i’ve been binging every episode 10/10

    Great content/ bad leftist framework.
This podcast is great and you should listen but this person has an annoying need to interject constant left wing / social Justice commentary into everything. It’s worth putting up with but I wish it wasn’t so colored by her present day worldview.

    educational & witty
absolutely love this podcast. I’m still listening to the beginning episodes, so I have a ways to go. but man, I enjoy listening to it everyday. Liv’s musings on Greek mythology are hilarious. check it out for yourself.

    My favorite mythological podcast
I was bored with Greek mythology for years, the same stories told over and over, and usually badly- but Livs in depth background and multiple viewpoints of these stories rekindled my love for these stories- her interviews in particular are great and my favorite thing to do is throw one on while playing Assassins Creed Odyssey:)
  • doctorokult
    I Freaking Love This Stuff!!
To say that Liv has utterly changed my understanding of Greek myth is an understatement! I had always been interested in mythology, ever since grade school, but Liv has opened my mind to the multitudes of perspectives contained within these ancient stories. Her focus on a feminist perspective is desperately needed in a world still firmly in the grasp of the patriarchy. I cannot recommend this podcast enough!!
  • RockyMTNQueenie
Came for the myths stayed for the history!
I can’t praise this show enough! It has just the right amount of whimsy, realism and education. I starts from episode one about a year ago and was hooked immediately! I first heard about this podcast while listening to Ancient History Fan Girl and new I had to find and listen to it. I am finally caught up to the present and I have loved seeing how the show has evolved and gotten better with each episode. I loved the retelling and explanations of the mythology but I have to say I have enjoyed the history deep dives more! The Atlantis and Sparta series were great and I am really looking forward to this new season of Bronze Age Greece. Thank you so much for creating this show and forcing me to think deeper about some of these myths and histories. I truly loved every minute of it from the mythology episodes to the conversation episodes I definitely have some favorites but all are wonderful and powerful in their own way! Keep doing what you are doing and I look forward to more!

    Spotify brought me here
So you have a great podcast and the first I got hooked on. Besides the ads, the podcast and the stories are worth all my time. I work in fiberglass and pretty much bust butt for 10 hours a day and your stories make that time fly. I love hearing them. I know you appreciate these reviews and I appreciate your podcast! Thank you keeping up the raging feminist twist to it all! Best part I must say!
  • Hannahmac13
    Whimsical & fun
I listen to these at work, which makes the work day a fun experience. I also love to read fantasy books, & knowing more about the origins/backstory of myths adds more dimension to the characters - which I LOVE!!
